Credit Cards with No Annual Fee

Derfor du bør ha et gebyrfritt kredittkort

Why You Should Have a No-Fee Credit Card

There are nearly 300 different credit cards available in Norway, and most of them have no annual fee. Using them is also free, aside from the cost of the goods and services you purchase.

It’s absolutely possible to save money with credit cards. Many cards offer discounts, bonus points, or cashback on purchases, and some even include free travel and cancellation insurance.

No-fee credit cards can also serve as a financial buffer while you build up your savings. And when you use them for everyday purchases, their perks can help you get more value out of your spending.

That said, there can still be extra costs, but the good news is that the best cards make it easy to avoid most of them.

Best Free Credit Cards with Bonus

  1. Bank Norwegian Credit Card – Earn Cashback or CashPoints on every purchase (CashPoints can be used with Norwegian Air).
  2. Morrow Bank Credit Card – Minimal fees, free travel and ID insurance, and 1 – 4 % bonus on all purchases.
  3. Resurs Gold Mastercard – 60 interest-free days, free travel insurance, and bonuses on all purchases with no annual fee.
  4. Trumf Credit Card – Earn Trumf bonus on everyday purchases, plus free grocery and travel insurance.

What Is an Annual Fee?

Many people ask whether credit cards cost money to own.

The answer: some cards do charge an annual fee, a fixed amount you pay once per year, regardless of whether you use the card.

Most Norwegian credit cards do not have an annual fee. When they do, it’s usually because they offer exclusive benefits, such as premium travel perks or concierge service.

Example:
Owning an American Express Platinum costs 7.800 kr per year, but you get:

  • Access to over 1,400 airport lounges (including OSL Premium at Gardermoen)
  • One of the best travel insurance packages available
  • Invitations to exclusive events
  • Points on all purchases, redeemable for cash, statement credit, or Eurobonus points.

Are Free Credit Cards Unprofitable for Banks?

Not at all. Banks still make money through:

  • Merchant fees – Every business that accepts card payments pays a small fee to the issuing bank.
  • Interest – Banks earn interest from users who don’t pay their balance in full.
  • Other fees – Such as cash withdrawal fees, late fees, or paper invoice fees.

Common Fees with “Free” Credit Cards

A “free” credit card simply means no annual fee but there can still be other charges:

  • Virtual card fee – Some banks charge for digital card copies.
  • Foreign exchange fee – Typically 1.75 – 2.30 % when paying in foreign currencies.
  • Paper invoice fee – Usually 35 – 45 kr per invoice.
  • Cash withdrawal fee – Typically 1 – 4 % of the withdrawn amount.
  • Money transfer fee – Around 45 kr per transfer to a bank account.
  • Bill payment fee – Around 45 kr per payment.
  • Inactivity fee – Some issuers charge around 150 kr if you don’t use your card for several months.

No single card includes all these fees, but it’s wise to compare cards before applying.

Easy Ways to Avoid Extra Costs

  • Use your card wisely – Avoid using it for bill payments or cash withdrawals.
  • Choose e-invoices – Usually free.
  • Pay your full balance on time – Then you pay no interest at all.

The only unavoidable fee is usually the foreign exchange fee, which applies to nearly all cards.

Benefits of Credit Cards with an Annual Fee

We’ve concluded that most Norwegian credit cards come without annual fees. The emphasis on “most” is because there are still a handful of cards that do cost money to keep in your wallet. Owning these cards can range from a few hundred to several thousand kroner per year.

Does this mean that paid credit cards offer more or better benefits than free ones?

Not necessarily.

Most paid credit cards include two advantages that free cards typically don’t offer:

  • Concierge service
  • Access to airport lounges

At the same time, these paid cards may actually offer fewer discounts and weaker insurance packages compared to the best free alternatives.

Are Credit Cards Without an Annual Fee Worse?

In the end, it all depends on what you want to use the card for. Do you travel frequently and enjoy relaxing in airport lounges around the world? Then a credit card with an annual fee might be perfect for you.

If you rarely find yourself at airports and are more interested in saving money with your credit card, one of the best free credit cards is probably all you need. Here are some examples of cards you can get without paying an annual fee:

  • TF Bank Mastercard (annual fee 0 kr): Free travel, cancellation, and ID theft insurance; up to 30% discounts at hundreds of retailers; up to 43 days interest-free credit.
  • re:member Black (annual fee 0 kr): Up to 20% discount at more than 200 stores and free travel and cancellation insurance.
  • Bank Norwegian Credit Card (annual fee 0 kr): Earn bonus points on all purchases, plus free travel and grocery insurance.

No, you won’t get free access to airport lounges with these cards. However, the insurance packages that come with them are fully on par with those offered by cards that charge an annual fee. And you’ll have a hard time finding a paid credit card that gives you as many discounts as these free ones do.

When Should You Choose a Free Credit Card?

Are VIP perks important to you — such as lounge access or earning extra points in programs like SAS Eurobonus or Flying Blue? In that case, it might be worth choosing a credit card with an annual fee, even if it’s more expensive than other options.

In almost all other situations, however, it pays to choose a card without an annual ownership fee. Here’s how to find the best free credit card for your needs:

  1. Determine why you want a credit card
Once you know the purpose of having a credit card, it becomes easier to find one that offers the benefits you actually need.
  2. Consider how you’ll use the card
Will you withdraw cash with it? Then the size of the cash withdrawal fee matters.
Do you plan to split your repayments over time? Then the interest rate becomes more important.
  3. Make a list
Write down the benefits you want and note which types of card use might trigger fees.

Use this list when comparing credit cards. We’ve created a helpful credit card selector that makes it easy to get started.

The Best of Both Worlds

A credit card that has it all? Sorry — it doesn’t exist. However, there’s nothing stopping you from combining the benefits of different cards. You can own more than one credit card. If you want to enjoy the exclusive perks that come with paid cards while also taking advantage of the discounts and bonuses offered by free ones, simply apply for multiple cards.

That way, you can use one card to access airport lounges, while the other helps you save money on everyday purchases.

Just be aware of the potential downside: it’s the total credit limit, not your actual outstanding debt, that appears in the credit registry. For example, if you have a credit card with a limit of NOK 100,000, that full amount will be listed as available credit — even if you haven’t used a single krone. The higher your registered credit and debt, the more difficult it may become to, say, get approved for a mortgage.

Yes or No to an Annual Fee?

Is it worth paying an annual fee just to own a credit card? For most people, the answer is no. There are plenty of credit cards that offer great benefits — without costing you anything.

The exception mainly applies to frequent travelers who value the extra comfort that comes with credit cards charging an annual fee. We should also mention SAS Eurobonus members, as there are several credit cards that allow you to earn Eurobonus points on all your purchases. Here are a couple of examples:

  • SAS Eurobonus World Mastercard
  • SAS Eurobonus World Mastercard Premium

These cards cost 4,615 kr and 2,335 kr per year, respectively. They don’t offer discounts or free insurance, but they let you earn up to 25 Eurobonus points per 100 kr spent. If you spend 30,000 kr per month, you’ll earn 54,000 points in a year — enough for five bonus trips with SAS Go within Scandinavia.

The point is this: you can still save a lot over the course of a year, even with a paid credit card. It all depends on how you use the card and what benefits matter most to you.
